The first Cigaret Shopper location opened in Brewer back in 1994. At the time the Cigaret Shopper stores were part of Reid’s Confectionery Co., wholesale supplier of products to convenience stores. This store was extremely successful as it was the only store of its kind catering to smokers by stocking all things tobacco. The focus at this time was cigarette cartons such as Winston and Marlboro which sold for just under $16 per carton and another discount brand, Eagle, that sold for under $10 per carton.
The first few stores were originally called Discount Cigarette Outlet and renamed a few years later. More stores soon opened in Lincoln, Ellsworth, Rockland, Portland and Westbrook. Over the years there have been as many as 20 locations.
Due to various reasons the number of stores had dwindled to seven as of 2007, when the stores were purchased by the owner’s son. Since then we have added 10 stores in locations around the state trying to provide quality reasonably priced tobacco products to adult consumers. During the past couple of years we have added walk-in cigar humidors, a cigar lounge and several beer caves. As smoking trends change such as with the emergence of electronic cigarettes and hookah we have tried to provide consumers with the products that they are requesting. Cigaret Shopper is a Maine-owned business and employees over 80 people.
